Artist's Statement
During one afternoon at a public library a long time ago, I ran across an obscure drawing from
the mid 16th century that made a lasting impression on me. The drawing that I saw depicted the simple outline of a human
head juxtaposed over a beautiful, sunny landscape. In the landscape, the sun was positioned within the outline
of the head. And the artist made it clear that rays from the sun were being projected from inside the head out through
the eyes, and illuminating, if not actually creating, the landscape itself.
It seems to me that our physical senses create the physical world we perceive. Within that
framework, and in a similar fashion as the drawing described above, I feel that the magic of light serves as a paint brush
creating a unique moment that reveals specific form, color, contrast, texture and depth. Such well defined visual moments
impact me with their own personalities. And sometimes in the process of recording those moments with a camera, my own
heart and soul is captured along with the image.
